Default Omhs????

I had a 3 ohms coil ignition in my 98 electric glide that went bad, I bought a new one and replaced it with the same coil and that one is now burning out as well....does anyone know why the coil keeps burning out??

Any help will be appreciated

Thanks in advance

Kelly

What ignition are you running?

Spec on the OEM coil is 3.3 to 3.7 OHMs primary and 16.5K to 19.5K OHMs on the secondary. How are your coils failing? Primary? Secondary? What's open? How are you determining they are burning out? What coil are you using? What spark plug wires (non resistor or resistor?) What plugs?

I am running NGK spark plugs, screaming eagle wires, screaming eagle 6000 ignition, I'm determining they are burning out by doing ohms test.

Bike was acting up backfiring, sputting, misfiring and jerking replaced coil bike ran great for a day and now same symptoms are occurring

Check your ignition module.

Yeah, I'm suspecting the module too. What resistance are you getting on the coil?

Sorry man I mistyped.
What I meant to say was check your cam sensor.

I had almost the same systems and the problem turned out to be the cam sensor.
It was only a couple of years old and the sealant had already started melting.
If it is your cam sensor then I highly recommend the Dynatek 2ki.
It makes cold starts so very easy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If the coil is actually getting fried, and I asked how we determined that, then something is grounding it out and overheating it. If the coil is not getting fried an it was just replaced and symptoms came back, then, yeah, pickup is highly suspect. Kelly said specifically that a resistance test was performed to determine that the coil failed. What was the resistance? 3 ohms is somewhat difficult to measure with a cheap meter. It could indicate anywhere between 2 and 6, say, with the "used to be free" Harbor Freight ones. When coils blow, they usually blow open. And that's pretty rare.

As mentioned, what was the primary and secondary ohm readings taken? The primary should be 2.5-3.1 and the secondary 10,000-12,500 ohm's. Also measure the voltage at the battery at 2000 rpm and tell us what you have...
