Takes some finesse to get that type clutch right, especially with an extra steel but they work very well when correct. I've noticed that too - if they start slipping, it's always at high rpms.
Dont feel bad i had to read the directions lol. After the original hub split thru the keyway and i put the upgraded hub in it has been good to me.

I think my clutch cable is from a springer softtail cause a buddy put a fancy SS braided one on his bike.
this bike isn't going anywhere so I will probably upgrade it this winter. Do you happen to remember what year range trap door fits these?

If I had to GUESS, I would GUESS that if you took the part number for a trap door from a 1987 FLHT and cross referenced that, you could come up with a list of donors.

unfortunately I don't remember, its been a few years I would venture a guess that anything when they switched over on up 5 speed will work. I got mine because a buddy was installing a billet one on a bike he was setting up for drag racing.

Up to 1993 with out a doubt, 1994 I believe Harley went with larger outside dia trap door bearings an upgrade, I believe the main shaft and secondary shafts are the same dia as the old, so you could go all the way up to 2006, but if you have an exhaust bracket or starter bracket that bolts to the trap door you may have to do a little modification there, the newer trap doors usually don't have the correct holes for that but no big deal

But if you really want to upgrade the bike this winter because you said you want to get rid of the clutch too, This is what you do, I've done this to my bike, other buddy's bikes, and helped one friend here on the forum, the newer 5 speed gear sets will fit in your transmission case up to 2006, but Id start at least 1994, better bigger trap door bearings, you can find nice used newer style gear sets, with trap door, and better newer style shift drums for like $250-$300 on ebay, then your main shaft will be upgraded to a spline shaft 1991-2006, getting rid of your tapered main shaft, clutch primary use 1991-1993 style then you can use your same starter and primary covers, 1991-1993 stock clutch primaries are not the best but Barnett makes a good one for these years, my friend that I helped here on the forum has his all back together and he says it shifts like butter and easy to find neutral, I did all this to my 1985fxr the only difference is I put an OD six speed in it now I leave twinkies in the dust

All very good info thank you much. If I end up just replacing the trapdoor I will definitely look for the later one with the bigger bearings.

Upgrading to a spline main shaft trans would be nice though. The reason I had originally shied away from doing it was because I didn't want to change my inner and outer and starter set up also. But you mentioned that 91 to 93 are their own animal? Will that set up work with the 4-speed starter and primary?
