Well….my 1998 ultra started tapping/knocking really loud. And oil began to pour out of the head breathers. And the bike was throwing out black smoke. 140,000 miles
The metal shavings/chunks were found in the oil and cam chest. Everything is fine in the cam chest….just full of shavings from somewhere.
I’ll be pulling off the heads and jugs….
I have a feeling the lower end took a dump.
Should have recorded the sound….but didn’t want to do anymore damage.
140K on a motor, you got your monies worth out of it.
So either time to play the strip down game to see what can be saved on rebuilding it, or just time to buy a crate motor to get another 100K out of it as well.
Just started tearing into my bike about a month ago….and then somehow got the Corona virus. That set me back about a month….too sick and too tired to anything. Anyways, I slowly got the engine out this past Sunday.
The front crank bearing was shot….but is repairable. The rear one was actually ok….but they’re both gonna get replaced.
The cylinders walls got scuffed up and so did the pistons. I’ll probably just order a new piston and cylinder set.
Other than flushing out and do a good cleaning….anything else?
You mean the crank pin for the connecting rods..? Did it send metal through the motor? If so might have to pull the crank and check the mains as well... Pretty sure the cases are coming apart....

Yes….I’ll be splitting the case sometime next week. The crank pin is shot and I assume the bearing is shot too. Lots of slop in the front.
Shavings were found in the cam chest and oil filter. Will flush the oil lines and run a magnet in the oil pan sometime before it gets put back together. It’s gonna be awhile….
