I have a fuel injected RK Classic that I bought new. I put on a stage 2 kit at 1000 mi. Ran great till now. I currently have 35,000. While on a trip last week it started to run reallyrough occaisionly. It will run fine then the engine light will come on an it will start to missfire and runn very rich. Sometimes the engine rpm's will increase to around 3,000 with the throttle closed. It will last from 30 seconds to 2 minutes and then clear up and run normally. It happened on and off for about 600 miles. I made it home Sunday and I would like some Ideas before I bring it to the dealer
Check simple things first like holes in the fuel line or a loose battery connection, loose plug wires or plugs. Check for pinched wires or shorts if you have recently taken something apart or added something to the bike. See where that get ya.
I ran the codes on it and came up with a 14 code. I don't have a clue what a 14 is but that is what I have. I am guessing by the way that it runs that the engine temperature sensor is sometimes seeing a false cold engine and callin for too much fuel. Any body confirm what a 14 is?
got the pm ..but will answer here so others can share...i have the same motorcycle/ same year..trouble code #14 is engine temperature sensor per section 9-18 in the service manual. (service manual # pn99483-98 ) ...i will get the information regarding removal/ replacement of temperature sensor in a few minutes..it is in section 9-88...but you should rule-out a short in wires to the sensor.....you will understand with the instructions...will try to take digital picture of page in the book..
I have the same bike and just replaced the engine temp sensor about 3 weeks ago. My symtoms wre similar. eratic idle, rev high for no reason for a while. I heard those sensors are a common problem. Although my bike ran fine except for the eratic idle. If you do change the sensor it is really easy. I took out the two bolts that hold the gas tank up front and just propped the front of the tank up to make room, also unpluged wires going to the coil. You need a deep socket to get the sensor out. After I put it in I also had to reset the hi and low idle. It is a good Idea to lubricate everything wher your throttle cables connect also. Since I did this everything is perfect. No more eratic idle. Bike goes from a high to low ldle in about one and ahalf minutes when cold. The manual has good instructions on how to rest your idles.If you have any questions email me and I would be happy to help. Shane

***disconnect battery as with all procedures first..this will erase the code also..
1.remove fuel tank.best if it is empty.. might be able to just raise the front with a few blocks...so you don't have to remove the fuel lines from the left side to the throttle body ..only remove the cross over line in the front....trick : disconnect one side of hose only and use electrical twist connector that hose...use a second piece of hose that has been plugged on other side
2.remove ignition coil connector, spark plug cables and ignition coil.
3-flashlight beam directed into center opening of front rocker box...it has a latch on the electrical connector.
4-use blade of small screwdriver to latch outward away from body of connector and pull apart pin and socket housing..
5-slide 3/4 inch deepwell socket over sensor hex and turn counterclockwise to loosen..when sensor turns easily pull out the deepwell socket and remove sensor by hand.
**installation is in reverse but hand tighten sensor first... then tighten to 10-12 ft-lbs
did a quick search for part number but was unable to locate it for a 1998...J and P has the sensor for 1999 at $25...maybe
someone has the part number ???? Jazz56 do you have the part number on your paperwork and cost?? if it is less than $50 probably not worth to order thru the internet unless shipping is low...
by the way sine we have the same bikes...on my bike the cam position sensor...the one inside the timer cover(right side of bike) ..started to melt after about 10,000 miles and caused a code 56...look under timer cone where the wire exits on the bottom for a plastic like substance that leaks out thru the hole....bike would burp on start-up and then catch on second or third try...just sharing information just in case.....
Thanks for sharing about the cam sensor. I will check it out. I still have the reciept for the engine temp sensor.. Part # 32446-95A Got it at a HD dealer . Cost was $94.50
Be VERY careful tightening up the sensor and don't do what I did.
It don't take much to break one off inside the head and it's a SOB to get it out and there not cheap.
