Default Throttle cables

Hi,

I have a 96 fxdwg with 12" bars and an hsr42 carb. I currently have 34" cables (housing length) and they are a bit too long as when I first got them, from J & P, I had to max out both adjusters to get the throttle to work properly.

Over time, I think the cables stretched, and now, on occasion, the pull cable (throttle) gets stuck and will stay in the open position when letting off the throttle. Not a fun way to ride by any means.

Anyway, I chatted the guy on the J & P site, and according to him, they don't have what I need. I've searched Google and can't find anything either. I'm thinking a 32" cable will do the trick, but I can't seem to find it. I can get custom cables made by Barnett, but if I have to do that, I want to make sure I get the right length as I'm sure there is a no return policy on custom orders.

So, if I'm way off base with my cable length here, please help me out and point me in the right direction. If I'm not, please let me know where I can order a cable of that particular length.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Barnett will make whatever you want. Make up a sketch, measure carefully, and send it to them.

I like to run a length of vinyl tubing to get the exact length you need.

Measure it up, give Barnett a call, and you're set.

Give Dennis Kirk a look, they seem to do a better job explaining the lengths and applications, I am confident you can find the needed length there.

I had Barnett make me some cables a few years ago so my memory may be off and their practice changed so you'll want to call and verify.

I had some cables made up long and had them cut down a few inches to get perfect. No big deal.

Just don't get short cables or you'll need to pay for new ones.

I'd just call them up and have a conversation.

Thanks for the replies, everyone.

I had an out-of-the-box idea when I was playing around with the cables earlier today. In theory, bar risers that are an inch or two higher would, essentially, the same thing as shorter cables, right?
If I keep the cables I have now, and get taller risers, I would think that would accomplish the same thing.

Comments?

How would this affect your brake lines and wiring harness? Is there enough slack in them to handle the 1" longer risers?

That, I'm not sure on yet as I have not tried it. I was kinda spitballin with that idea, anyway.

Figured out what the issue was. Turns out, the cables were routed improperly. Once I got it corrected, the throttle worked like it should.

Thanks for the help.
