Default Cams for '92 FLHS

I know this is going to open a can of worms . . . looking at cams.

Someone already suggested the EV13. A mild cam with a good chance. I'm looking at that and a few others.

The Wood W6 looks promising, says it's 'bolt in' but I've heard guys talk about needing to do some machining for clearance. Anyone have experience with the Wood W6?I

I'm looking for smooth powerband from idle - up. I don't normally run rpm's too high. The only time I open the throttle for power is when I'm passing someone or trying to catch up to someone.
65mph @ 3k rpm right now. I've got my Shovelhead geared for 70mph @ 3k rpm. I would like to do the same with this Evo eventually which means I've been looking into a 65T rear pulley instead of the 70T that's on it now. Maybe I should start a different thread about this, but it's worth mentioning when talking about performance upgrades.

Anyway, let's open this can-o-worms and get started.

I typically avoid opinion threads but... having experimented with several cams years ago, I went with the EV13 a year ago. Never tried a V-Thunder of any grind but about every other bolt-in cam you could think of. After many years/miles with various radical cams I can say for a Tour bike, EV13 is really better down low and gives up nothing in the higher rpms. I get 50mpg low speed cruising around and solid mid-upper 40's at high speed plus getting from 65-85 is a lot quicker than I ever imagined it could be.

Generally speaking, high lift is for low rpms and longer duration is for high rpms. Timing, overlap and all that plays into the mix.

Solid push rods will be a lot quieter than adjustables but whatever works for you. If the speedo/tach are correct (most aren't), you're only turning around 3200 @70. I don't think you'd be happy with a 65T on that bike unless you change some other gearing in the primary and remember, too small on the front pulley will destroy a belt quickly.

Y'all have at it...

I like what t150vej is saying.. especially with keeping the stock solid pushrods.. I went to a pre 1991 "L" cam years ago in a '95 Bagger...Loved it..
No EVO bagger anymore but If I had one, I would look "L", EV13, maybe EV23...Since I tend to stay with OE ignition etc on Dressers... I don't need a Cam that "comes on" higher up!!!

Yes... yer gonna get a Jillion recommendations.. try to find someone locally who has similar Bike, with whatever cam, and take a ride with them.... Not Race with them...a real Ride. Follow them about paying attention to "Manners"

Consider adding 2 teeth to the front pulley
Did so on EVO FXR and FXRT with EV 13 cams
Happy with the results ( admittedly those bikes are lighter )

Following this thread cuz I am new to the EVO platfrom. Picked up a 96 FLHT and went with an EV 27 cam. Added S&S tappets and Andrews fully adjustable pushrods. Not looking for anything close to a hotrod set up, just some mild upgrades. Still using the stock exhiast system as well.

Used to be everyone with an Evo went with EV27 or EV3. I have one with a EV3 and can't complain.

A Woods 6 will require more motor work.. it truly likes 10:2 compression and doesn't really come on till 2800 rpm. In a Bagger that ain't helpful.. Stock with the EV 13 and a better air cleaner. Stock pushrods are fine.. If you have 30k plus miles, replace the lifters.. OEM or Hi-lift Johnson are fine.. You will need to rejet the carb.. If you want to go to a 65 rear pulley you will need to put a 2 tooth smaller belt which means removing the inner primary to do so.. It'll put you at 3.13:1 for final drive at 1:1. Not to hard down low taking off with a 9.20:1 first gear ratio that the EV 13 should handle no problem.. Cruising at 3000 rpm should put you at 72 mph

I haven't heard much about the EV23. How does it compare?
