1991 FLH. Why do these bikes occasionally do this on engagement of the starter? Clash, bang grind....I hate it, can just imagine chunks of ring gear or starter drive in the bottom of the primary. Both my FLH and my 00 Dyna do it. Seems every 20-30th startup. Did for the first time in a while yesterday. On my FLH I installed the dedicated relay mod. To make things easy on the system I usually back the thing up in gear to pull the piston down off compression before starting. I pull the clutch lever to minimize drag. I understand the last 2 things don't really affect the problem of drive gear engagement. I freakin' cringe every time I go to hit the button. Never hear anyone elses bike do this. I'm gonna bring in a solenoid button but not convinced that will solve this. I recently saw a post stating that a weak compensator could cause a problem of some sort. Thanks for any thoughts...

A buddy of mine had a gear clash issue on his '88 FL.
I had heard a story about trying this: Loosen all the outer primary bolts, push upward on the outer primary to raise it as much as possible on the inner primary and re-tighten the bolts while applying upward pressure on the outer primary case.
It worked for him but who knows if it'll work for you? His had the gear clash almost every start and it stopped doing that after the adjustment.
Good luck man.
Clutch gear going out, bad cable connections & grounds, battery getting weak, or one of a few other issues.
Start with the simple stuff like load checking the batteries and make sure they are fully charged. Clean all the cable connections and ground points particularly the big ground strap under the trans. Still got issues time to dig deeper.
Don't go all crazy on big stuff till you do the common little things first.
Thanks fellas. The wiring/cables are clean and tight. The Batt is a Dekka AGM a couple years old, always on a tender. The battery seems to be in good cond and hits hard, especially when it clashes... Maybe I'll have it load tested. Megawatts 'adjustment' suggestion is certainly something I will try when I next change primary fluid.
