Yes, I would want to know how much charging voltage your getting back to the battery (not too much), and check for any AC voltage being sent to the battery as well.
A puffed up battery is due to a charging system malfunction, or battery defect, or both.
Put a new, load tested battery in the bike, and perform a charging system check.

I don`t think you can even get the old type trickle chargers any more, it is just a generic term these days.
