Default Engine Number - Decoding BMLU024180

My 1998 Electra Glide Classic doesn't have the original engine. The original engine had oil pump problems and was replaced by another EVO engine, supposedly a 1998 model. I don't know that for a fact and it was word of mouth from a previous owner, not the one who did the swap. I have tried finding out how to decode what the engine number letters mean. So far I understand that the L stands for carb model. This current engine is a 96 or newer as it has the two dots for the timing advance with the stock ignition module. As I understand it HD started marking the flywheels that way in 1996. Anybody have any idea to tell what year this engine is or what model it came out of. Thanks for any help.

I think it's a BMLV not U. Which makes it a 1997 Fatboy 1340 Evo engine.. There was no U designation for model year..

Thanks for that, I'll check again on the V or U. It's likely that it is a V as its hard to tell the way they punched the numbers into the block. I don't think there was any real differences between the 97 & 98 engines.

Not Much... But, It has been noted that the MoCo became less concerned with engine bottom end Balancing, on the rubber mounted engines. From (limited) experience, the Rigid mounted engines seem Smoother. More well balanced.. A Plus???
