Everything addressed and she is running well. I'm going to do a quick shake down run this afternoon, change all of the oils and should be good for a while!
Ill echo what Dan said above and suggest you replace those compliance fittings. If previous owner put a zip tie on the elbow rather than replace it he may not have been aware of a compliance fitting issue. With my 88 flst I bought it new so when a new noise showed up I noticed it and took care of it. When they crack you might notice a whistle sound can check by spraying A SMALL AMOUNT of carb cleaner on them while its running, if idle changes its leaking.
I eventually put a S&S with S&S intake but I have replaced the stock fittings, its a bit fiddly but not real hard.
I have it's twin, except for one little difference.
Right now its frame is on a work bench, going to take around $3000 in parts alone to put it back together. Was a badly neglected and worn out bike, but I got it for the motor. Fastest EVO I ever rode. When it was running... Forget what I was going to fix on it, but everything I took off just revealed more problems. Finally said, ok, this is a frame up restore.
Had a little help taking it apart. Every place covered by something was filthy. Wiring was really molested, I'll build a new wiring harness. I got the motor out by myself, but I've gotten too old to even think about putting it back in alone. Specs for the S&S say 160 lbs.
Hopefully I'll get it back on the road before I get too old (any day now), but that grandson in the photo may end up finishing it. I'd love to ride it again, was a really comfortable bike and good handling, despite so much worn out on it.
I put some decent miles on her this weekend and she feels really good! Im still getting a strong fuel smell when I park it, and a some fuel coming out of the overflow, on the recommendation of a friend I'll put a couple of tanks of good gas through before I do anything else (it had sat for a few years before I got it). Other than that nothing I can see outside of little things needing to be tightened up. I got caught on a detour and got to do 4 miles on a dirt/ gravel road in the rain, that was fun! 75 on the freeway last night and she just floated along, I think Im in love!!
Since the last post I did switch over to CV carb, and while doing that realized the petcock was leaking, so I switched that out as well. I haven't done much else other than ride it. It does stumble some when cold, I will try to get the tune dialed in , in the Spring, as snow is already on the ground here in Michigan.
I always remember to turn the petcock off, it's the turning it back on that I forget! Nothing like that first feeling of panic when the carb starts running dry....
