Default 97 Split Tank

On a 97 heritage softail with a split tank, can you accidentally switch the 2 gas caps when putting them on? Or will the correct cap ONLY go on the correct hole?

Thanks

On my Shovelhead, one is vented, and one isn't. Vented one goes on the right (high side when leaned over and parked), I've never tried switching them. I think it could leak if the tanks were really full.
My Evo Electra-Glide is a one piece, so I don't know if the bungs are different from side to side on the two-piece tanks.

You cannot switch the caps, the left cap has left hand threads.

My 98 has LH threads on left side and not vented. Right, RH threads and vented.

The tanks on my Softail in my sig are `97 tanks, the left tank has left hand threads, just like the original tank (safe in the attic).

I always fill the left tank first, replace the cap and then fill the right tank.

Exactly what I do. If I don't, it isn't full if I only fill the right side. Found that out the hard way years ago.

If you don’t replace the left cap, there’s a good chance you’ll have gas overflowing while you’re filling the right side.
A liquid will always seek its own level.
