Handlebar top clamp
Fork tube axle clamps
Switch gear
All REQUIRE a gap to be secure. (preferably "even" on both sides)
If it`s tight and the buttons work , stop worrying about it

This is my '92. Don't think it's ever been apart before. There is a gap, but everything seems to be okay.

If there was no gap the housings could be loose on the bars enough for them to twist some.
The gap was most likely there before any ways

As mentioned, equal gap and I thought there was some type of a locating dowel to keep it in place.

I found it best to hold the assembly in place with one hand and then put in the screws.
