Those rocker boxes and 'never been apart' doesn't quite aline. If I was updating the boxes for style I'd be haunted to update the cam for fun.
Moving all the wiring from the headlight is a big deal, it'd make sure the electrical rework is solid.
To me the important thing is a nice undamaged frame and an engine that is right from cold.
ETA... I've seen new aftermarket mid control reproductions, I have no idea if they are quality or not. Otherwise it's an eBay hunt... or Elvis.
The owner reports that the work was done by a high end custom bike builder that he knew and trusted. I know it's a real mess in the OEM headlight bucket, been in there with my 83.
I'm thinking a fairing down the road sometime so having this already done is a plus for me, yes if it is solid. I'll know pretty quick if it's quality wiring when I see the bike tomorrow.
Yes current owner wanted tons of chrome so rocker boxes probably were polished aluminum, so you got me there.
Found Taiwan Teds kit out there and I know that is a crap shoot. I can't afford Elvis's retirement fund. Maybe I will post a swap with another FXR owner that wants forward. I found the parts catalogue in Harleys SIP portal so that will help. Got a bid on a HD shop service manual as I hate pdf downloads.

Nice find and it looks tidy. I started a RT fairing install thread we did at the shop in the FXR sub forum that may be helpful when you get to that point. It's installed on a Shovelhead FXR but the process is the same. You can still find parts for them though not as readily available as more common models.

Thanks Rizzo, I did follow your RT thread when you were doing the mod. You inspired me and I've been looking for a suitable candidate since then. I didn't want to go down that road with my 83 shovel but this 87 will do nicely.
I want to move the controls back to mid, will I be able to get parts to do that? Front end I'm
If you have a Facebook account find FXR Parts and get ahold of Craig Ferrie,he has tons of FXR parts for sale and is a stand up guy.
I bought a mid set for my '89 FXR project from him, it was in beautiful condition it was well packaged and was shipped promptly.
Reporting back, went to see the 87 FXRS-SP and it was a dog. I called it a 10 footer, my wife corrected me and said it was a 20 footer. Claim to be original owner was BS, had a title for 1992 and a song and dance as to why. Simple questions about the bike could not be answered with any clarity. Bike flipper BS artist, walked away.
