Having a really hard time finding three step drag pipes for my 90 Softail in chrome. Anyone know where I can find some? Preferably under $500..
If I can’t find any, anyone know a good place to have homemade ones chromed? My guy can’t do anything that large without a middle seam.
Years ago I started with the mathematical formula and tact the last section. I stretched it longer until mph went down, then I went back a half inch, next I stretched the 1 3/4 first section until 60ft times worsend went back the half inch and called it good. I compared that to just drag pipes tuned by mph and found the stepped really smoothed the mid range and increased 60 ft times.

They do nothing on a dyno but take torque away - it was a car header thing years back and no one does that anymore - other then a visual that most will miss

I have a love hate relationship with dyno’s. They lie … a lot. I KNOW step tuned headers work. And at the track, on big motors, are FAR superior to 2 into 1 pipes. 2 into 1x pipes are all made for stage 2 80” motors… and on big motors with lots of compression are way to restrictive. When your making 130-150 ft lbs of torque you don’t care if a 2 into 1 makes 1-3 ft lbs of peak torque more at 3500 rpm. You don’t care about peak. On small motors a 2 into 1 raises your average ft lbs of torque, on Big motors it suffocates it.
I’ll never give 2 into 1 another chance. For me it’s fact because I did all I could and then some with the blunder header.. big step backward and waisted half a season. Fool me once… Maybe your mileage was better? I just know it was a $1200 mistake and 3-4 months of disappointment for me.
The biggest reason the modern crowd is so against drag pipes is nobody tunes them anymore. Buy them at 40”.. cut 1 inch off at a time until you get the highest average mph.. then keep cutting until mph goes down. Then start over with a second set and leave the last 1” on. That’s tuned. Then mess with thumb screws or baffles. If you worry about street only.. If none of your riding is above 4500 rpm, then tune with large slip ons.

Bassani pro streets. Pull the baffles.. You can also make your own..
IIRC RB racing makes a tapered drag pipe that works well.. Buddy had an 84 ci sportster that could turn into the high 9s (AHDRA) with a set of those pipes.

I just put these pro streets on my springer and really noticed a good increase in low end power and they are stepped wish i had installed them sooner!!
