Default Differences between Cali carb and other states?

I have a stock 93 Nostalgia except for a set of pipes and a Mikuni carb. I’m putting it back to 100% stock and picked up a mint correct carb, however it is from a California model. Can anyone point me to the specs on the carb so I can see what is different from a 49 state carb? Thanks!

Put that carb in a box and re install the mikuni - if not your going to be unhappy with the performance and over all riding experience

that is what this is all about - unless you have a Twinkie then WELL everyone knows the well

49 state jetting is the only difference and removing the lock out plug on the bottom so you can make it idle on real air days instead of the fancy air Calif has

Not sure exactly what carb you have, so if you use the carb part number on a HD parts site you might get more accurate info. Also there are a lot of aftermarket carbs that look exactly like the HD carb but are not the same. I just used the info for those years Electra Glide Classic, most of the carb stuff was interchangeable between the models. As to differences in carb jetting.Main Jet California - 165 , 49 States - 175. Slow jet there was a difference between early and late models, and I believe the early models had # 40 pilot jet, and later models # 42. I know my 98 came stock with 175 main and 42 pilot.

The biggest difference if you want to be totally accurate is the backing plate and related gate opening etc. The California models had a solenoid set up that controlled the flapper on the bottom of the carb backing plate and the 49 state models didn't.

I recently went through a similar process as you are doing, but my 98 had a stock twin cam backing plate and filter cover when I bought the bike. I also wanted the stock setup for the EVO. The carb was still stock to the EVO but being a Canadian model it had the 49 state carb jetting, needle etc. I couldn't find a backing plate without the flapper valve on the bottom, so I ended up getting one with the valve and just removing it. You can't tell the difference from the outside and they are identical otherwise. It also took awhile to track down a mint EVO air filter cover for the Electra Glide but I did eventually find one. Also the breather bolts for the EVO are tough to find, but the ones for these years Sportsters are easy to find and they are a direct replacement. The twin cam ones have a smaller inside diameter hole than the EVO's and they take a different breather hose. A period HD parts fiche is a good place to track down part numbers and you can see what you are actually looking for.

As to the CV40. Don't sell it short. These simple tuning tips make it work well. Replace the needle with the Sportster N 65 one ( used in the non acclerator pump sportster models ), start with the stock 42 pilot and 175 main, take the plug out over the mixture screw and turn it out 2 turns from seated, this is just a starting point. Adjust the idle so it is 1000 rpm, bike warmed up. Go for a ride and you may have to adjust the the idle and mixture screw slightly to get a good solid idle at 1000 rpm. If you end up with the mixture screw 1 turn or less out then the pilot jet is too rich, if it is 3 or more turns out then it is too lean. The stock setting was about 1 1/8 turn out from seated, so normally you have to turn it out between 1/2 to 1 1/2 turns out from that setting. If you are anywhere in that range you are good to go. The new needle and mixture adjustment, fix the lean spot on these era carbs. Everything else including the main was good. The EPA never looks at WOT readings which the main jet controls, so from the factory they are fine. These is with less restrictive exhaust and intake. If you increase the engine size then you may have to change the pilot jet. Jetting doesn't always change with an increase in cu in.

Sorry I got long winded. Not hard to tell its winter up here.

Thanks Guys!

I actually bought the Cali air cleaner too from the seller. He took the parts of the bike within the first 6 months of owning it new, so they are mint. The carb is a 27035-92A for an early 93, which mine is.

Thanks! The bike has 5,200 miles, so the seat is pretty good, but I’m looking for an NOS seat. I bought NOS bags and backrest for it so far…

I’d consider a different seat for riding… those seats are hard to find and pricey!
Good to know someone’s gonna preserve one for my great grandchildren to ogle.

I’ve got 2 nos fat boy seats too, that I may use for riding. This isn’t my only bike and I’m 61 years old. I earned my hard *** award 30 years ago…
