HardDrive oil pump
will the s&s hvhp oil pump install without pulling engine assembly from frame, been told not enough room between engine/trans? 1990 flhtc. converted to trike... I do not conversion has any bearing on engine repairs.
this bike/trike has been a nightmare... problem arose on ride home from purchase, engine made noise, upon tear down found front cylinder broken inner exhaust spring!
someone had installed THICK shims under all springs causing coil bind, due to coil bind pulled cam (cam appears to be crane ukn grind) I plan on replacing cam with EV23, lifters still looking & doing research, suggestions?
had heads & cylinders reworked @ local shop.
Thanks for any and all input!

That's right they do, I forgot about that.. Sorry.. It's because the HVHP pump has wider gears therefore bigger pump itself requiring a longer shaft.. Sorry but I don't know anything about hard drive...
And starter motors.

replacement of oil pump @ this point is just "too error on the side of caution"... I just purchased unit, had issues on trip home, local shop suggested replacement of oil pump, investment of oil pump cheap vs ????????
opened cam chest to confirm/exchange cam... I know oil pump can be changed without all this work, just thought if pump is to be replaced... change now!
Thanks for input

Cam cover off makes it easier to r&r pump for sure. But, the design has been around for half a century and 99.999% of the time if one fails on an Evo, something else caused it. Pulling it to inspect the cavities and drive keys would tell you where to start and if there's something else to be concerned about especially if the cam chest interior clean... or not. Replace one for preventative maintenance? Without something else causing an oil pump failure, it's the least likely thing on the whole bike to fail on it's own.
Without knowing the symptoms that you're concerned about, I'd not venture a guess but Evos, the first place you lose pressure from miles/wear are the tappet guide bores and/or lifter bodies scored or wearing out.
Speaking for myself, maybe others, we get old and cynical after so many years and hate to see others waste time and money from bad advice. That's why some of us are here, to help.

Just like others hinted, there's no need for an oil pump replacement, unless you had a failure that would cause debris to go through the pump. The cost of labor would be great when you pull the engine. Can you replace the oil pump with engine installed? Yes, but you will be re-using the oil pump shaft.
Like t150vej, have a look inside the cam chest area and related gears on pinion shaft, and breather gear. I suggest putting your money on new lifters with new cam.
