Have a 97 FLSTC with an S&S Teardrop Aircleaner and a V&H Staggered Logshots exaust system - everything else is stock.
I'm told the Air Cleaner and Exhaust wont get on with the CV Carby and I will need to change my Jets for different one, larger or smaller I can't remember. Anyway - what size Jets Main and Slow should I put in the CV Carby so it is more compatible with the Ai Cleaner and Exhaust?
Personally I'd do the upgrade kit on the carb, new slide, jet tubes ect. Give the stocker a whole new personality with the usual add ons like pipes and AC.
Thanks gents - all sounds like solid advice to me. Getting the Carb rebuilt sounds like the best suggestion - covers everything and brings it out of 1997 into 2023 - well, sort of
If I was in your boots, I wouldn't drill anything on the carb. What I would do and I did on my bike, was put a Mikuni 42 carb and intake on the engine. Much easier to tune and less moving parts than the CV40. Right out of the box the Mikuni 42 runs well on just about any engine/intake/exhaust setup. Straight pipes are still going to make it tough to tune.
The gas mileage thing. A couple of weeks ago I was at a motorcycle event and there was a fellow there with a 2008 Electra Glide Ultra Classic, 96 cu in engine, with a Stage 1, fuel injected. When we got to talking gas mileage we were both getting the same mileage, 40 mpg US. I don't know how he rides his bike but I like to think I'm a pretty conservative rider, not overly aggressive on the throttle. I find on average overall, on my bike I normally get around 50 mpg Cdn gallon. That is in day to day riding but no high speed interstate stuff.
The consensus on the CV40 to Mikuni 42 switch is that you will loose a couple of mpg. My experience has shown that to be fairly accurate, but not always. Depending on how your ride, and what performance upgrades you've done on the CV 40, there is not much difference. Part of the problem is that the Mikuni 42 has such good acceleration that you tend to use it more. The Mikuni is a slightly larger carb but there are some easy changes you can make that will help your gas mileage. It all depends on what type of engine set up you have and what you want. The engine starts & runs so much better with the Mikuni.42. You have to ride a bike with a properly set up Mikuni to appreciate the difference.
You have to remember that the Mikuni 42/45/48 carbs are performance carbs. Its no different than doing a stage 1 or 2 you are going to burn more fuel. These are not EPA type carbs, so gas mileage is not really their thing.
Okay - so I fially found a mechanic to do the work and an EX HD Mechanic at that. One who isn't all that impressed with HD in terms of what they tell their customers. Anyway, that is another story.
At the end of the day and after discussin a number of things his suggestion was simply this - "Get rid of the S&S Stuff, rebuild your stock Carby and have the bike tuned properly for the mods made and the stock CV... ". Additionally, he recommended putting on a Dynatek Ignition instead fo the S&S ignition..." The bottom line is I am just going to get the CV rebuilt with appropriate Jets for the mods done amd will leave it in this guys hands.
Now, in the hope of sstopping any "debates" he stated that S&S have some very good stuff BUT not for an Evo Harley. Best carb for an Evo is what they came with - the CV followed by a Mikuni if necessary.
