Default 1988 FXR clutch adjustment

Hey I picked up an 88 fxr, finally have it running great, but the clutch I feel engages to far out on the lever. I adjusted like the book says but was wondering if 3/4 turn on the clutch push rod is too much, I think all of my bikes I go clockwise till it touches then 1/4 turn counter clockwise.

Yes, that style clutch likes 3/4 out from seated. Remember, that's with the cable adjustment fully collapsed. Why I have no idea, but they sometimes won't adjust out correctly otherwise.

Read this post. I didn't write it but gives some tricks/tips that aren't in the book that can be very helpful. (Just substitute 3/4 where it says 1/2 turns out) https://www.hdforums.com/forum/prima...-easy-way.html

Also, while the cover is off, check the diaphragm spring with a short straight edge to see if it's flat, bowed out or in. (convex or concave) If it's off more than .010 from flat and the book you have doesn't explain it, get back to us.

Don’t get it too tight, the early ones would eat the little throw out bearing if preloaded any.

The diaphragm spring looks fine but now it feels like it’s to tight, with 1/8” of play at cable the clutch lever won’t go flush to the grip it’s close but seems to far out, i had to walk away I’ll try again tomorrow!!

So I finally test rode it and it feels better but would like it to catch a little closer to the bars, my question is that if I adjust the pushrod out maybe 1 turn instead of 3/4 should it catch closer to bars?

Not really. It's just the geometry of cable pull, release ramp/***** and movement of the pressure plate. No matter what you do, if you change one part, it'll throw another so far off, nothing works correctly.

Best to adjust your preference of engagement point at the cable adjuster. You need to ride it more than a few miles to decide if it needs a change. They will feel differently after they've been used a number of times and everything totally up to temp. If you get it too close to the bars - as in can't get neutral or whatever, easier to change that on the cable rather than open it up in a parking lot somewhere.

Fluid type, condition of the discs and plates, spring plate adjustment will all slightly affect engagement point but this style clutch generally prefers about 3/4 to an inch off the bars for starting engagement.
