Hi
On my recent purchase of an 89 FLH, the voltage gauge fluctuates when the turn signals are activated. It goes from 14v to 12v as the signals are flashing. What could this mean?
I have an 89 FLHTC that does the exact same thing. Italso happens when applying the brakes (I have an auxiliary brake light on the tour pack). As long as the voltage comes back up when the turn signals and brake lights are off, I wouldn't worry.
The Stock Stator puts out around 30 amps , at idle it is not charging the battery. Out on the highway it will. Watching the voltage drop as you put on turnsignals, hit the brakes, etc, it wil drop the voltage measured at the meter, but it should come back afterwards.
Ok, just tested the charging circuit and the stator seems to be dead. No A/C volts coming from it when tested.
My question is.....does the inner primary need to come off? Can I get to the stator by just removing the outer cover and clutch and sproket?
89 FLH
I have a '93 electra glide and it does the same thing ( Volt meter fluxes up and down along with the turn signals and also drops when the brakes are applied ). When the voltage drops when the brakes are applied then my right turn signal will not come on ( I think the turn signal module isn't getting enough voltage to operate the right turn signal ) when I give it alittle gas and bring the rpms up the voltage will climb back up and the right turn signal will start working again.
A real pain when coming to a stop and the right turn signal doesn't want to work!!!

Hey rivercityslim......Have you tried a new battery or had yours load tested? I posted this problem on the Electrical forum of this site and someone replied back and told me to replace my battery and it would fix all the problems. I haven't done that yet due to lack of time and I just don't want to pay for a new battery and that's not the problem. I have a friend that has a newer Electra glide so I want to try his battery in mine to see what happens but just haven't had the time to do this yet. Let me know if you tried anything with the battery yetor when I get time to swap my battery with my friends battery then I will let you all know what happens.
I'd start there too. The battery should operate those items for the short periods of time you describe. I'd also clean both ends of both battery cables and maybe even replace the cables if I had any reason to suspect them.
It's not that the signals or brake lights don't work (they work fine), but when they are on, I can see the voltmeter dip slightly. The battery is new this summer, and I keep it on a battery tender most of the time (meaning whenever I remember to plug it in), so I don't think there is anything wrong with the battery. A friend who also has an Ultra (I think it'sa 93) sees the same thing on his. For that matter, I saw it on my 83 Gold Wing too, and it was never a problem (as long as the voltage pops right back up when the brake lights or signals shut off).
