Default Rear brakes problem

Been awhile but went for a ride and stepped on rear brakes…nothing. Came home and went to check fluid, for leaks or anything else and they were working. Went for another ride and working fine, collapsed line? Any help in looking for the possible issue would be appreciated.

When you say nothing do you mean no brake pedal pressure, or pressure and no braking action?

Yeah, the pedal went all the way down, no pressure. No brakes. Came back to diagnose and they were working. Went for a ride around town and they were working fine. Fluid is full.

If you had no brake pressure, it’s full of fluid, and no leaks, then it’s the master cylinder, there’s not much else it can be.

Could there have been air trapped in the system that broke loose? (just spit balling)

I don't see how it could be. I'm working on the assumption that the system has not been opened recently and has been working normal for some time or the OP would have mentioned it. If that's the case then there's really no way air could have got into the system without some sort of leak and he said there's no evidence of that. In addition if air got in the system somehow how did it get back out by itself without bleeding? The simplest answer and the only one that makes any sense is fluid bypassing the piston inside the master cylinder.

True, haven’t been open forever. Always worked fine. Bypassing within cylinder is an explanation, just curious why it would come back. And work like before, doesn’t seem like air before or after.
solid pedal after no pedal.

Any chance at all that rear wheel was removed, tire changed, brake pads changed, fluid changed or similar was done and bike was put away with no test ride?
Reason:
It can take several press and release of brakes to get pads lined-up again.

Has the master cylinder ever been rebuilt?
