Hi all,
Managed to take the new to me fatboy for its first decent ride today, (cured the coked plugs), and began doing a bit more exploring.
On start up there was a definite jarring from the starter (cogs) whilst she started I run over the manoeuvre several times and go the same feedback. When I checked the bike over last week this didn’t occur she started fine as might be expected so my thinking is what might have changed since. The battery has been on a charger but I'm wondering if its cranking capacity is reduced as it’s likely to be quite old and sat for long periods. The bike only has 10.5 k miles. So im off to check the battery at the weekend as im hoping its nothing more sinister.
My second problem that you guys might help me with is identifying this “reader” port (my assumption, photo below. From the records I have the bike has a Compufire Ignition and timing module installed if that helps. I have scribbled around beneath the bike this evening trying to trace it without success I may take another look at the weekend.

Thanks all.
Forget the plug. Because of the Compufire ignition it no longer works. The original ignition was connected there.

Thats a relief as it look done in 😂 I guess when I get the bike up on the ramp for the maintenance jobs I have planned I can pull it out if I can trace it?
I have not heard of ”compufire” ignition systems (lived in a shell maybe) do you know how these are generally rated ie decent /top drawer or get another as soon as you can?
Thanks

Should I send you the original manual for the electrical system as a PDF? Everyone swears by the ignition that they drive themselves, it's like oil, everyone knows better. I don't know if the Compufire is any good. I converted to Dyna S and am super satisfied.

That is very kind of you thanks - if it is in the clymer manual i wont need as I have one on order, I assume it might be in this.
The Compufire ignition is a good ignition.. You shouldn't have any problems with that.. The complete module is in the nose cone and fires the coil directly..
The plug you see there the three pin triangular is for the original cam position sensor connection that used to be down in those cone. What happens today is they tend to melt out overtime and fail, that's why somebody put in the Compufire..
I would just tape up the connector well and tuck it back up into the frame.. It's all part of the original harness and if he ever do go back to the original ignition you're going to need it so leave it be..
Otherwise you should be good to go enjoy..
One more thing if you can get a Factory Service Manual do so.. The Clymer isn't bad but it's not as good as OEM..

Thank you very much for the thoughts and sound advice - I will Google out a factory manual - the clymer will hopefully do in the interim. Ride safe 🙏

I think I may have located an oem service manual but can’t confirm the part number -the one I have is 99482-99 - would you know if this is correct? Thanks
