Gents....hopefully a simple question. I have a 1992 Dyna FXDC.
The PO put on forward controls which is fine but I am working on replacing all the gaskets and oil seals behind the inner primary and while there I want to leave the Mid control shifter in place in case I want to change it back to mids at some point.
I bought a used gear shifter and it came with a rubber spacer. It fits my bike but only without the rubber spacer.
In my Parts catalogue/Manual there is no mention of any spacer on the back of the inner primary where the arm slides in BUT I have seen some use a "Wave" washer.
Am I OK without a washer or do I need to order one (which will delay me a week!)
Attached photos which hopefully explain what i mean.
Thanks
No to the question of the rubber spacer. The rubber spacer is a work around for something the previous owner of that part had to deal with and it don't belong.
Yes to the question of the wave washer. It is there to keep a little tension on the mechanism and keep things from (for lack of a better term) "flopping around" it takes out a little slop. Number 65 in the diagram does a good job of keeping the sleeve in place along with the tight fit that the O-rings on the sleeve provide. However:
The wave washer keeps #69 (and #67) from sliding in and out a little. It takes the slop out without creating to much tension. Probably keeps vibrating noise down and helps control how much the shifter moves in and out of the primary. Any wave washer that fits over the shaft of #69 will work. The wave washer goes right where you indicate in your second pic. It goes on #69 before you slide #69 into the inner primary and through the sleeve (#70). You need to measure so you know your getting a wave washer that fits over the shaft but just going from memory and as I mentioned, any wave washer that fits over the shaft will work. Don't wait a week for a dealer part: Link below is an example and arrives in one day. Hope the info helps, and thank t150vej for the heads up regarding the question.

Thank you gentlemen for a fast and informative reply as always, really appreciated.
Yankee Dog I think you're right, even though it's not in the book I think it makes sense. Thanks guys.
Looks like the link to a wave washer on amazon did not go thru. Posting the link below again. Monchidog, since you have it apart, what is the size of the shaft? 1/2 inch?
