It seems as motors upto and including 1991 have problems with cracks in the cases and heads. Would this affect the Sturgis, or is it a second half of the year introduction model and can the motor be counted as a 1992 ? What issues are there to look out for with the motor / complete drive train ? What are things to look out for in these early Dyna’s ?

This would be my 3rd Sturgis as I also have an 81 and a 82, but those are Shovelheads…

Thanks for any help you can give !
I think the Sturgis models are some of the coolest bikes to ever roll of the assembly line. How about posting some pics of your Shovel head Sturgis bikes?

Nope, never heard of it either. Got a pic or link?

This is in the vault, the back story is the Dyna frame was still in the early stages of pre production and the MoCo wanted to rerelease the Sturgis on that new platform, but just in case the Dyna didn’t come out as scheduled. They mocked it up for possible release as a Softail.

Pretty cool, but not as cool as the real thing IMHO.

Exactly what happened to my 1989 FXR after I had about 90k miles on it. I replaced the cases with a short block from Vtwin MFG.

The crack in the case was behind the aft lifter block.

So thank you guys for your messages here. I decided not to pursue this bike because of the possible engine problems. The cracks and leaking via the crank into the primary is not something you can check just looking at the bike for 10 minutes and making a short test ride. Yes all this stuff can be replaced but then it won't be a stock matching numbers bike anymore, so part of the value will be lost. Also I want to ride the bike (it would be my only Harley able to break 60mph ) so engine cracks really matter (this would matter if I would just park it). Some screenshots from the ad (original wheels are included):

Asking price is the equivalent of 12700 $ , which is about 2/3rd of what I paid for the 1981 FXB. And about 50% more than a regular EVO costs here from around this time period.
