Transmssion Interchange?
Will 95 Dyna low rider guts fit in an 89 softail transmission? I think they are different cases, right? Then, do I also use the 95 clutch in the 89 primary? I am looking at one tomorrow. Thanks

Bumping this question back up to the top. Hopefully someone with more experience will chime in.
Don't know about the case, and not completely sure, but I think you need to change out the clutch also. (Splines vs tapered shaft?). Also starter gear tooth count will probably be different so that starter gear will need to be changed at least. Might even need the later starter.
I would look at some of the online parts diagrams and compare part numbers.

The easiest way to do this is remove the shafts from the Dyna trap door, and transfer them over to the Softail trap door.
The reason for this is because the Softail trap door already has a drain plug.
If you were to use the Dyna trap door, you would have to drill a hole for a transmission drain plug.
You would also need to replace the clutch, because the `95 transmission has a splined mainshaft.
An OEM clutch 1990-1993 will be a direct fit.
A later clutch will work but will have different starter ring gear tooth count (requiring a different starter pinion gear)
A later clutch will also have a different primary chain sprocket tooth count.
Note: The process of removing the shafts from the trap door will damage the trap door bearings, so they must be replaced.

To wrap this thread up. Today I looked at the 95 Dyna parts bike, hoping I could use the motor and transmission, plus a few little things like mufflers to resurrect my 89 Springer. The 95 is junk too. But a local shop owner who I have become friendly with says even with water, my transmission will be fine, just take it apart and clean it up. Maybe replace the main bearing while I am there. So thanks for all who gave advice, maybe it'll help someone in the future.
