Cam spacer washer
Probably a really silly question, but I'm installing an Andrews cam in my '99 Evo & I need to install a .050 spacer.
Should I slide on the spacer before or after the original thrust washer? Does it matter?

If you have measured the new cam length between shoulders and its .050" shorter than old cam, then need to use the suplied shim.
The wing thrust plate against engine case, .050" shim on inside of cam shaft against it shoulder, so spacer shim is sister ed between cam inside shoulder and wing thrust plate washer.
So this goes in first with grease on the inside surface of the thurst plate so it sticks to the case,
.
The need spacer shim on cam right hand side below with plently of assembly lube on both ends of cam and lobs.

And make sure to index the cam correctly to the index marks on the crank gear and breather.
Note, crank gear line can be semi hidden, so make sure you have its line straight up, before you install the cam,

Also, with nose come cover on with gasket, before you install the lifter blocks, reach into the void to push the cam side to side, and should have about .010" free movement side to side. If cam can not be moved side to side about .010" (think two sheets of copier paper stacked that will be .008"), then will need to pull the cam cover, install cam without shim, see what free place you have of the cam side to side movement, then use a shim that is .010" thinner that that.
Also, don't forget the breather nylon washer (grease to hold it in place, on the end of the breather, before you re-installl the case cover with gasket.

Thanks folks, pretty much as I figured. My 99 doesn't have a winged washer, just a pain thrust washer, but the principle is the same. Thank you!
I took some very careful measurements of the original, with & without the washer & the Andrews, with & without the washer & there's .055 difference. I ordered a shim kit, so I should be able to dial in the end play pretty simply.

Koyo B138, buy them by the hand full,
And since you already have the tool to remove and install them, anytime your in your (or anyone else's) evo cam chest, just replace it.
To add, Lifters hold trick in lifter block, instead of buying the magnetic tool that does the same thing.

Something that doesn’t get mentioned much when changing out the cam:
Similar to measuring the cam shim, the breather gear nylon spacer/shim needs to be measured and fitted with the appropriate sized spacer washer. The required thickness of the breather gear shim/spacer may have changed.
The factory service manual mentions how to check.
How critical is the end play on the breather gear being in or out of spec? Who knows?
