87 FXRS on checking end play with dial indicator gauge, what am I trying to do? do I set contact point in center of axel and rotate tire or should I try and move tire side to side or what? I must be slow but I can learn, I just need to know what i'm checking, service manual is not clear to me
thanks GAdog
What I did was pull the wheel off and clean the bearings with gasoline and brake cleaner. Then I put the wheel back on the bike with no grease in the bearings. I used the magnetic base on the brake disk and put the dial indicator on the center of the axle. Then I "wiggled" the tire back and forth watching the dial indicater. I had .003 on it and the specs for my bike were .002-.006 so I was in range. Then I pulled the wheel back off and packed the bearings with new grease and put it all back together.
