I don't know why I never paid any attention to this, but are the gas caps on my '97 FLSTC vented or unvented?
Mine have gotten so loose that the other day I was sure that I was having a lifter problem again, but I slowed enough to be able to lean down more than I usually do and it was the left cap rattling. The right-side cap was too but not quite as much.
The caps have a ratchet mechanism in them that can rattle, the right side is vented and they do look slightly different flipped upside down with a little check in gray or black

Rattle is because they are cheap made, and that part that lets go, and Rattled when tightened..rattles..Matters Not which is which, as they won't go the Wrong way... Left one is Left hand Threads.. (unvented BTW)
Edit; It seems to me that there was a Car with a cap like that, where instructions said tighten til it clicks twice...or maybe it was 3 times...I forget..just some useless information I somehow came up with..

that was a Saab Monte Carlo 1960s it was a 3 cylinder 2 stroke with 3 carbs and the gas cap had a tube connected to it for measuring the 2 stroke oil and it clicked when putting it back in the tanks filler
Okay, good. Right is, left isn't. Stock I can get a right-side, but left I can't, so I'm looking for a halfway decent replacement to get in January since the OL's b-day is the 18th, her momma's b-day is the 7th, and of course kisstmuhass the 25th all has me so broke I'm worrying about getting the electric bill paid since I wasn't able to find a green tree that got blowed down in someone's yard or something that I could buck and split and stack for wood for the wood stove. I had to settle on a tree that had been down for about a year, but that's not proper or good seasoned wood...a lot of it is rotten instead of seasoned. Seasoning is when the whole section of wood, as in split logs, can disperse the moisture in it more evenly. It takes 6 to 7 months if it was split well and stacked well to be seasoned for burning properly and giving the heat that wood should give (oak, hickory, etc, any of the hardwoods, including some fruit trees) are the best there is. My problem is, my truck gets 15 mpg. I *must* find a green tree as close to my home as possible so I can afford the back and forth. Because of my disabilities, I can't fill a truck bed like it should be because by the time I've bucked anything I'm hurting like hell and of course still need to try and get all the bucked logs I can, which usually ends up with maybe a quarter of a short-bed p/u filled, lol. Oh well, life in the woods!
Everyone have a Merry Christmas, Hanukka, Happy Holidays!!
Don't know about a 97 but my 94 the rt's vented the left's not and the left has a left hand thread.
The ratcheting isn't necessary unless you have some reason they need to be positioned a certain way.
