If you have the same tanks like I do, which iI believe you do, there's an overflow on the right hand tank and a cross connect between the two tanks up on to of the tanks.. Both can be located underneath the dash bezel.. The overflow (that i have circled in blue) also works as a vent so you don't necessarily need to put vented caps on your tanks.. I never have had vented caps and never had an issue
But...I do Not remember seeing a Left hand threaded cap, that was Vented..and I would Not want one on My Bike..unless I don't care about the paint!! Or...Maybe Never Fill all the way!!!!

That has always made me wonder why they (HD) would make people worry about having a vented cap or not. I mean that thing is big enough to allow hot vapors to escape *very* easily. Oh well, I got the set with the right-side vented. I also had to settle for the ratcheting type again...this month with two b-days *AND* kisstmuhass, I was counting pennies by the middle of the month, so I had to settle on something relatively cheap. Maybe someday Santa will bring me the set *w/out* the ratchet (I suppose I ought to stop threatening to shoot one of his reindeer for shitting all over my roof, heh heh).
Anyway, it's all clear in my head now, so you guys all have a wonderful Christmas, Happy Chanuka, and a prosperous New Year!

Been that way since dual Tanks were invented... and No Worry at all..right side (Vented caps), are right hand Threads, while left tank caps, are left hand thread, (Not vented), ..as O.E....cant screw that up!!! But maybe the aftermarket, and some with a Better Idea, can..
Edit; While I admit, I have removed a Fuel Gauge..on an Accident...I have never managed to put a Left threaded Cap on the right ...nor Vice Versa.. would take some Determination me thinks

It's not an overflow. It's a vent. It allows the gas to drain equally between the 2 tanks. As racepres says, the left cap is sealed so that the left tank don't overflow when it's on the side stand.
