1985 FXWG
Im getting working on getting the wide glide running, however Im in a bit of a dilemma, probably why the PO never got it going. The inner primary cover is the issue, it musta spun a bearing and the PO had it welded however they never finished the job its just a blob of weld. Ive been looking for used inner primaries only to find out they are extremely rare. I believe the HD pn is 60444-84 I know it has casting numbers X30-00085. Anyway Ive decided to get rid of the belt drive and go with chain and sprockets because I have a brand new Shovelhead chrome inner primary cover. At this point Im looking at what sprocket sizes to get. Im thinking 49/24??

A little confused hear.. This 85 WG is it an Evo with 4 or 5 speed? Are you looking for an inner primary setup? 24/37... Or the secondary drive?... A 24/49 secondary would give you an overall ratio of 3.15:1.. A 23/49 would be my choice with an over ratio of 3.28:1
An 85 FXWG inner primary is part number 60414-84.. And pretty sure it's a 4 speed and with that a 23 sprocket on the rear is as big as you want to go because the chain will wear into the inner primary housing..

Will the shovel inner primary work with your starter? Never worked on any 80’s EVO’s but seems to me you may run into issue?

I Own a 1986 FXWG...Remember that the Outer Primary is a 9 bolt...most older 4-speed primaries, are 8 Bolt.. I do Get away with an 8 bolt gasket,if I'm careful.. I have always run chain Primary/Belt Final. as Stock.
If it was a bit more Economical, I would go Belt Primary with a New Clutch as well...as I detest that L'84 Clutch!
Never have had Problems with a Belt Final...except at the DragStrip...then it is Avoidable if one pays particular attention.. Might change If I end up with an S&S engine in it..certainly if a 124!!!
Edit; I will need to look more carefully at the Starter..I have Not paid it much attention...thinking it must be just like any other 4-speed Starter...But, IDK.. possibly something Changed with the Belt Final ...what? around 1982??
