OK guys. 1998 FXSTC with about 20K on the speedo. I've noticed that when I put her into first, I get a definite "clunk". When I shift through all gears, I get a definite "clunk". When I am hard on the gas, I canjust feel the tranny shafts spinning through the shifter lever (IE, I can just makeout a slight grind through the lever). The oil has not changed colour. Last change there was no filings. I adjusted the clutch back to manual specs, but it is all still there. I know the evo tranny is a clunker (my brother in laws FXR definitely clunked), but does this sound normal. BTW, the tranny has no noises when running hard or soft and holds a gear without any problems.
We bought a new '95 Buell Blast for the wife a couple years ago, and it has the same clunk as our '90 Ultra. Our '90 Ultra has about 96,000 miles on it and of those about 32,000 since we have it. The only real problem we had with the transmission was the 50 cent shifter return spring broke, and nicked up a few gears. Once in a while when the Ultra hot it will miss a gear, then I don't get any clunk... They say using HD synthetic oil makes it better but I can't say I noticed any really big improvement using synthetic.
Try changing fluid to Red Line or Royal Purple something like a 75 or more as the first number and a 140 for the last number ( each brandhas a little different numbers available) it will slow don the gears and quite the "klunck" a lot.
My 98 Dyna clunks into first too. Even after changing fluids, checking clutch and primary chain tension. So -- I assume its normal. In fact, I kinda like it! Lets me know I'm ready to roll!
