I'm a bit bummed out and I figured I'd ask for help here.I broke the choke **** on my 98 Road King while trying to adjust the tention and all at the same time I noticedthat the hose going from my petcock to my carb is just about burned through from hitting the engine and melting almost all the way through. I know if I take it to the dealer I'm looking at at least $250 buckaroonees. How easy or hard is it to replace the choke **** and cable. I can probably do the gas hose, but the damn choke **** and cable looks a little tight where it screws into the carb. Must I remove the carburator to get at it. Thanks in advance.
Havta tell ya right off I have never done an EVO but on the twincam it is pretty easy. Loosening the carb up does make it a lot easier, but you don't have to remove the cables, just get it away from the intake. You will probably have to move it to change the fuel hose anyway.
There is a rubber boot over the carb end of the cable which pulls off then the cable unscrews. Put the boot on the new cable and screw it in. Best of all it was less than $20.00. I couldn't believe it.
I am guessing there might be a few differences on your motor, but I hope this helps a bit.
This happened to me today as well, just after I reinstalled the carb from rejetting it. Mine is a '97 WG, so I expect it to be the same. Pulling the carb off is easy, especially if you don't disconnect the cables. But if you do need to take them off, you may want more room to work with to get them back on. Loosen the front fuel tank mount bolt, and remove the rear. This will give you a couple of inches to lift the tank, and more room to move the carb around.
Thanks. Does the carb have a gasget I need to replace after I loosen it? Also is it just the 2 screws that hold the carb in place and do I need to apply any kind of locktight to the actual air cleaner bolts?
No gaskets to replace if just taking carb loose, it's held onto the manifold with a rubber boot and clamp like a dirt bike. I have never used loctite on the air cleaner, but it couldn't hurt to put some blue on there if you wanted to. That hose that is burning through, is it the fuel line or the v.o.e.s line?
Fuel line. Thanks for the info, I just got back from the harley deallership and bought me 2 foot of line and clamps. I will attemt the project soon as it stops raining here. Unfortunately my Hog is covered up in the back yard due to I converted my garage into a computer room.... Pre Hogging days. Had I known a couple years back I would be on a bike again I never woulda done it.... Go figure. Still I can't believe I went 10 years without a harley..That's what kids and a wife do ta ya...
Make sure you hook the little ball at the end of the chock/enrichener cable into the female slot in the carb then tighten the threads hand tight I use alittle dish soap on the carb body as I push it into the rubber seal on the manifold
You need to take a sledge hammer to that computer room and give your bike a home. Put the computer outside with a cover over it. If you don't have one, get a HD shop manual, best $50 you will spend.
Exactly......... I'm still working on the old lady to agree with the reconversion. She said for me to build a shed out back and while I'm at it remodel my dog house to be a little more comfy cause that's where I'll be sleeping for a while if I decide to get rid of the computer room...............[&:]
