Put a new regulator on the bike and all I'm getting is 12.5 at the battery ? I know I should be getting about 13.5 to 14 but is this 12.5 OK ? I ran it all over today making short stops and it started evey time just not sure about the long runs.
You are not getting a charge, assure the connector to the stator has not pushed into the case, this happens and even though the plug from the reg is inserted all the way it is not connected. The other possibility is the lead from reg to batt is not connected.
If the stator lead is pushed into the case, you will need to disassemble the drive sprocket/pulley and remove the rotor to access the "dropped" plug. Many Evos don't have the retainer clip for that plug so is can be pushed in pretty easily.
Regulator failure will show excessive(over 14.5v). If the reg was replaced because of low voltage you need to do an Ohm test on the stator to assure it is good. This can be done from the outside if you can get multimeter leads to the connector(engine not running).
A) check all the connections.
B) If all connected, check stator
C) If main stator plug is pushed in, disassembly is required.
Your manual will outline all these procedures for you and have elec. specs to test for.
Good Luck.
check your stator Volt meter set it to volts AC Pull the regulator plug out put the meter probes across the 2 female holes as it comes out of the primary Start the bike you should read 20 volts (AC) per 1000 rpm At 2000 rpms you should be reading 40 volts plus or minus Now take on of the probes to ground you should not read anything Do the same on the other probe
Thanks all I;m Off Monday and Tuesday and will work on it then, I'm getting 40 + out of the stator and now I leaning to the battery haveing a bad ground IE dead cell ? I will fallow up Tuesday.
Congrats, those rectifiers(volt regs) are kinda like fuses, given a shock or surge(usually due to bad connections) they blow leaving you with a batt frying 16+v or zilch. Good Luck.
