I've heard from some folks that the single fire can in some cases smooth the engine vibrations somewhat. I've also heard that the single fire provides a hotter spark to the plug and makes the plugs last longer.
Doing an engine build up on my 93 FXLR shortly. I have purchased a Dyna 2000 dual/single fire module and the single fire coil. I plan to initially test fire, break in the engine and select the correct advance curve on dual fire. After that is accomplished we'll switch over to the single fire system. All that need to be done to do that are the installation of two additional wires (included with the kit)and the coil.
If you are not in a rush, get up with me in about a month. I'llbe able to tell you if any difference can be felt between the Dyna dual/single system and the current Screamin Eagle system.
When I was discussing replacing my ignition with my indy mechanic, I asked this same question. His take was that a single-fire ignition would only give a noticeable performance boost on a highly-tuned, big-inch hot rod motor. For my mildly boosted dresser, a high quality dual-fire ignition with a high-output dual fire coil would do just fine. After the (dual fire) Spyke ignition was installed last summer along with the new Spyke high output coil, I noticed a significant improvement, so I'm assuming he was right.
I've heard the same as Rivercityslim, it aint worth it unless you got some kind of super built engine like a drag motor. You would be better off spending the dough on a quaility duel fire ignition. I have the SE with a stock coil and it works great with my whimmpy stage II engine.
I had one in my 85 wide glide. I replaced my points with the Crane HI-4 single fire kit. Ran better than with points and the idle was really smooth and sounded great. I didn't really notice much else until the unit failed, dam near left me walkin/pushin... Crane sent me a new setup but I'm back to points again. My .02 cents.
Ride Free!!!!!
If your 85 WG has points the previous owner installed them. They came with an electronic ignition system. My 85 is set up that way.
I took the stock electronic ignition out back in '90 when it failed. (Cheaper to convert to points than buy a module!) Been running points ever since with short periods of electronic systems such as Dyna S and Crane HI-4. Back to points everytime. No problems with em in over 100,00 miles cept for a bad condenser once. I would like to get electronic back in but with all the bad luck I've had with em and what with all the cross country trips I take, points are hard to beat and easy to fix!!
I'm running Daytona Twin Tec. Like it alot has different sound idleing more agressive kindalike the twin cams. Smother not sure how much could be msd type spark control.
