Hi all,

Before I ask advice this is my first Harley so please allow for any stupid questions.

I bought a 1990 Electra Glide Ultra, 44k miles. The clutch was badly adjusted and slipping, not sure why but there was no slack in the clutch cable. I have set this to about 2mm of slack and this seems to have got rid of most of the slipping except in top gear. Whats the opinion new clutch or the current plates are glazed? maybe just a bit of time to bed back in or am i clutching (no pun intended) at straws.

Second question, how difficult should it be to start the big twins? from cold it to forever and didn't like to idle, lots of misfire at low RPM. To add to this starting from luke warm although better still farts and bangs until a good few minutes have passed. Even small twists of throttle can cause the bike to misfire and stop any ideas?

Lastly, I have what sounds like a cam chain rattle when riding. From what i understand Harleys are push rod so no cam chain, am I looking at engine or possibly some body work rattle.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Regards
J
As stated earlier in this post, get an HD service manual if you dont have one already!! While it sounds like you have most of your problems under control, here is another item of interest for anyone who owns a 89 or 90 Evo. Some, not all, have engine oil seeping from the engine into the primary case. Most times it isn't enough to be a real issue as long as you keep maintenance up and change all your oils at regular intervals. However, some (my 89 softail for instance) will run about a full quart of engine oil in to the primary during my 2000 mile engine oil change interval. There is a service bulletin on it so HD realized the problem but didn't do a recall. If you didn't notice it, you didn't get it fixed. That was years ago so too late now for any free repair from HD.
Anyway bottom line is,engine oil on the clutch plates will glaze the plates and cause the slippage you are describing. The easiest fix for that is just replace the friction plates and clean your steel plates. Make sure the steels are flat before you reinstall, excessive slippagecan cause warpage...
Your slippage could also be just worn out clutch plates!! Gotta take it apart to find out
Not tryin to freak you out. IF yours is a leaker, you can ride it like that for many thousands of miles, just gottakeep on top of your oil levels.
That's my .02 cents....

Get the HD manual. Others leave a bit to be desired.

Your 'misfire' when you slowly roll on the throtle from idle sounds exactly like the problem I was having last year, and the first couple of rides this year. Changed all three intake gaskets a month ago and it's never happened since.

Cheers... Ben.

I miss stated in the last posting, not a miss fire but quite a lot of backfire.

Now for a really stupid question, where can i get a genuine HD manual from. I can't seem to find a reference anywhere, I am over in the US later this week so if someone could point me to a site or bookshop etc which might carry the manual it would be appreciated.

I think 99483-90 is the correct number, there is also a 99483-90SP supplement but I don't know what all is in that one. I also purchased the Clymer Service Manual which is about twice as big with more pictures. I usually end up checking both as some times the angle of the photo or diagram is different enough to clarify something for me. The parts manual is also good to have but many of the parts numbers are no longer good, but it will show you how things are assembled.

Ebay has worked for me. I have bought 2 Genuine HD service manuals (both used)for under $30 each including shipping. Just make sure the person you are purchasing from has good feedback.
Good Luck!!
