MAP gas is just a couple dollars more than propane, but gets a lot hotter. A poor man's oxy acetylene so to speak.

Just tried it yesterday. I'm not sure I did it right though
I used MPS gas to heat it to cherry red, then cooled it in oil (maybe I had to use water?)...
Then I was reheating to see a "moving blue line", as they describe at some tempering sites.
I didn't see it clearly though... then cool on air. Maybe I should have used propaine for that step, or omit it altoghether?
The tip is now grey, similar to what I see on the factory one, maybe a bit more pale.
The bad thing is that , the feel when I try to file it is very similar to the untreated area (in my perception, at least)...
Maybe I should release it and repeat the whole thing?

Well, if you think you hosed it, get another piece of metal and try again. You could practice on the piece you have now until you get the hang of it. I don't think the gas you used to heat it makes any difference.
You heat the piece just until it just turns red, when it cools enough to not glow anymore immediately clean a section of it with the file to get the slag/coating out of the way so you can see the metal, when you see blue (it might be right there as soon as you clean away the slag) immerse it in water. I have never used oil as a cooling medium. Practice some, you'll get it. After you cool it and clean off the slag with a wire wheel, brush or emery cloth, it will look like just regular steel. It's not going to make it extremely hard and may be hard to tell from the rest of the piece (I assume you are using mild steel, not some fancy alloy) but it'll be hard enough to do the job. Did you get yourself a nice piece of cold rolled round stock?

Thanks megawatt, for your help. turns out that I did temper it good enough for this application. Probably it wasn't as hard as I expected, but colorwise it was almost exactly like the stock one.
They looked at it at the shop and said it should be good enough.
