Default EVO Primary swap for Newer

I posted an earlier question if I can swap my EVO Outer Primary Cover(1998 Fatboy) for a newer Primary Cover. Some say I could other didn't think so. Well to update you. I change my EVO primary, and replaced it with a Primary Cover off of a 2006 Nightrain. Worked perfect
Thanks for all of your input......BULL

I don't remember if I posted an answer to you, but I can say that I replaced my EVO 99 outer primary cover for a 2002 model one.

+1 for you.

You already know you can.The inner cover is different from TwinCam to Evo,that difference is the transmission bolt holes.

What about earlier swaps. Can I put a late 90's inner outer primary on my 87 Heritage? Iknow I need to chagne the clutch/starter etc..., just wondering if the engine and tranny bolt up the same.

Actually, the difference is the trans bolt pattern form Evo to TwinCam.On all the rubber mounts bikes it is different.Sure it is the same on the Softtails

I am goingto install a 6 speed in my 87 Heritage over the next couple of months.

Didsome research and discoveredthat the starter thru hole is about an inch smaller on the 88-down trannys than on the 89-up models. The alignment holes are also different. I think that means that you can't retrofit 89-up primary/starter onto an 88 down tranny.

So if I to change the tranny I need to update the clutch which means I have to update the starter which means new primary. The only thing "old" will be the engine and I beleive the engine mounting pattern is a constant for the evo's.

From the threads above, it looks like the primary choice is dictated solely by starer design which is again drive by the clutch starter ring.

I am hoping the mounting for the newer tranny's works on the old softail.

Will advise as things progress.
