Default CV carb discussion

Been seeing a lot (here and there) about CV carb options/opinions. I put a 95 CV on my 87 (stock, with mostly open mufflers). It was 45/165 and great mileage, but way too lean on a plug read, and heated up bad in a town. I ended up at 48/175 which is&nbsp\\;close to&nbsp\\;stock butterfly and get 48-51 mpg with mild throttle and under 70 mph, 42-45 WFO.&nbsp\\; Keep in mind - thats on a fuel and go - warm engine. I've been thinking about shiming the needle up to give a bit more power in midrange, but hesitate since it's SO good otherwise.
&nbsp\\;
Also, does anyone know EXACTLY what the difference is with a Sportster needle? Shorter, and/or thinner - what?

The Sportster needle is richer a the start due to that model not having an accelerator pump. So it puts more fuel in the mixture. Thinner i would imagine. My 92 fatboy i run 45 slow with 175 main and a sprtster needle jet no shims. 48 is usually run recommended with twin cams. 42 was stock in most. Kent

The sporty needle is smaller in diameter than the stock needle\\; more area around it inside the jet for fuel mixture, therefore richer.
You're getting as good as you can get with 48-51mpg.&nbsp\\; Have you made other changes, like a cam, that might affect the midrange?

Had an SE-1 that got ate up on the (new) bearing with less than 500 miles, before an SE-3 that did the same. Loved the duration and was getting similar mileage with a little more backpressure on the mufflers. Ran an EV-23 a long time with little back pressure and that's what I a running now.
&nbsp\\;
Again, the high mileage is with very conservative acceleration (I mean I'm working at at) and speeds under 70. Worst I get is 42 (wfo) which is 8 - 15 more mpg than the stock Kehein.
&nbsp\\;
Otherwise the engine is factory stock, timing set 35 BTC
