stranded in indiana. 84 fxr keeps dying. starts fine but dies running down the road will restart and all lights stay. checked all fuel comonets replaced all circuit breakers and wires stator and regulator and coil. please help with ideas on what it could be.
yours is older than mine, but when my evo did it about 4 years ago, it was the ignition. Went on for about 3 months and would start back and ride off. The last time it cut off, it would not start back. Repalced with a Daytona Twin tech ignition and never had problem again. Not saying that is your problem, just sharing my experience.
I have a Crane on my 93 fatboy and had a problem with it and it came down to my regulator. The Crane tech told me that Crane is very touchy and needs the volts the regulator is suppose to put out and keeping the battery up to par. Before I called the tech, I replaced my ingnition back to the old and didn't seem to have a problem as the stock ingnition is more forgiving. So after replacing the old regulator, I put the Crane ingnition back on and it has been running fine. When I took off the old regulator, the bottom was burned
Had the same issue, using the service manual and help from others on this site I was able to find the problem. \\; Over, all I replaced too many components of the ignition system that did not need and almost gave up...Have you tried testing the ignition sensor plate? \\; Over the years heat will destroy the plate and cause the ignition to fail. \\; The bike will start but when the plate heats up the bike stalls...once cooled off the bike will start, then dies again after the plate heats up. \\; The easiest way to check (no extra cost) is remove the sensor plate cover, start the bike...using a hair dryer heat the sensor plate...if the bike starts miss firing and wants to stall..you've probably found your issue. \\; This test is also mentioned in the HD service manual...Good Luck
