Yes, I'd avoid pre-85. Most stock (original) seats you'll find are brown or badly worn. They had a mid-year change in 84 but I'm not sure what changed as far as seat mounting is concerned.
Should be able to use 85 - 91 seats no problem... possibly more. It depends on the manufacturer and exactly what type of seat you're looking for. Some styles from certain mfg.s fit a broader range of years, because they use different mounting arangements. ie. a solo saddle may fit a lot of years because you have to change the rear bolt placement anyway.
Just look around, but be careful of buying one online .. get lots of good photos before you buy one.
