SE head gaskets on Evo
I am porting and polishing my heads and wanted to give it a little bit more compression. I took .030 off the heads and wanted another .020 - .030. I bought a screaming eagle gasket set from the local steeler in Anchorage thinking that they would be thinner than the previous gaskets I put on her.
I should have ordered a set of James - this set of gaskets are not equal to the quality that I saw from my last set of James gaskets.
So - let's get to the question. The SE head gaskets have 4 pieces of metal riveted together. 3 thin stamped gaskets and 1 thicker flat plate. I drilled the rivets and tossed the thicker flat plate, put the three remaining gaskets together in the same order as they were when new and torqued the heads down.
Am I going to smoke the head gaskets when I start her up?
(A) I have big bore cylinders, so my choices are limited.
(B) Cometic offers EVO head gaskets in different thicknesses, currently using .030.
(C) At 10.5 to 1 static, I've never had one fail.
She did sound awesome though. I went from 90psi to 140 psi - the 3 screeming buzzard gaskets measured .028 before squish...so the cometic should put me around 130psi static - which is about where I want to be.
I think that this bike has stock bottom end in it and I don't want to "have" to replace it for at least 12K miles - I think that the hard thumping it was doing last night with this compression increase may not be best for the motor -- - but if you wanna play you gotta pay......
