Help!!! Calibrating a screaming eagle air flow kit
I am about to purchase the screaming eagle pro air cleaner and breather kit. It says that the carb must be calibrated. Has anyone calibrated it themselves? Mine is a 98 Road King 1340 with stock carburator. Any suggestions on how to do it. The lady at the dealer said she did it herself, although she had EFI model.
Get a jet needle out of an '88 Sportster without an accelerator pump, they are slightly smaller in diameter and will richen up the mid-range. Then on the bottom of the carb, in bear the spigot that sticks into the manifold you will see a lead plug. Carefully with a small drill bit drill that plug out (don't go in too deep or you will hit the idle air bleed screw). Then take a sheet metal screw and screw it into the lead plug and pull it out. Next gently take a small straight screwdriver and turn the screw in until it just bottoms out. Then turn it out two full turns. At this point you still have the stock jets in. Warm the bike up and adjust the idle air screw in until the motor starts to run rough or slows down. Then turn the screw out counting the turns until it starts to run rough or slow down. Now turn the screw in half -way and leave it.
Now take the bike out for a test drive, you should be happy with it. If you decide you need to change the jets then you need to re-adjust it again. Do not put a lighter spring or drill out the slide as you mileage will suffer more than any increase in performance. Hope this helps.
