That inner primary is critical on starter alignment as well as the throw out of the starter gear onto the clutch basket ring gear Too far onto the ring gear the starter gear won't release etc I have a custom that eats ring gears ! (aftermarket inner primary )
well....I found the problem...it was combo of things... a bare wire underneath the gas tank...must have caught it when I put it back on...a loose connector the coil..but the biggest problem was I had two of the wires at the coil connected wrong(dumdum)...causing the timing to be off...got that all corrected and she turned over just fine....thanx guys for all your input.
It cranked over but it wouldn't run...it was firing on the wrong cylinder...soon as I switched the wires around ...big difference....did you test the coil?
OK, my bike will run, in fact I have put over 1000 miles on mine already. Just have this starting problem........ not every time.
I had the dealer look at it, and it has them stumped. Their only suggestion was to put in a Crane timing system so I can delay that first spark, or put in compression release.
I am running SE heads with new jugs and pistons, running 10.5 : 1 compression.
If you don't have compression releases...that may be a good idea...before I did my engine swap my 80 inch EVO had S&S heads,10:1 comp. and an S&S 520 cam...I killed the hitachi starter and several batteries...I upgraded to the all ***** starter and the odyssey battery and did not have a problem..but even with that I was still considering comp. releases.
I pulled the plugs last night, and the starter spins the motor with no problem at all. But...... the starter/solenoid would not disengage even after I released the switch.
Pulled the primary and the starter gear is binding up with the clutch ring gear. It almost appears that the it wont release until the motor starts and takes off the pressure?
Still puzzled, but it look like comp releases are a part of the fix.
