What is the purpose of exhaust wrap? I am very unhappy with the chrome quality of my thunderheader pipes and I am either going to wrap them or ceramic coat them. Are there any risks with using exhaust wrap?
the purpose of the exhaust wrap is to keep the heat down. So the bike feels cooler to you.
Not only feeling cooler but cooler operating temps too.
My pipes have been wrapped for 2 years now with no ill effects. Although I don't have to worry about burning my leg up I also like the fact that it does reduce the engine temps too.
They are also supposed to keep heat in the pipes which allows for more flow, however, I would guess that it is a pretty minimal performance gain. I have been wrapping my pipes for a while and I like the overall look. It does fade after a while, but that adds to the look too. I am also one who really has no desire to polish chrome all the time, so the wrap covers up some of that. As for the actual leg temps, hot is hot and I'm not sure I really noticed anything more or less from the tape.
One note, the stuff I have bought is soaked in some oil-like substance and so when it first gets hot it smokes like crazy. My advice is to start it up the first time and then quickly get into town - when you stop at a traffic light it will be smokin' like yer britches are on fire and you will love the looks you get. Just sit there with a big old smile on your face! It's pretty funny.
i love the wrap. at full temp i can grab the pipes for about 3 seconds before it burns me so no worries for me burning my leg or melting my boots to the pipe.
