Default Tank Vent Question

I bought an aftermarket tank for my 87 project and it has a vent tube that has a nipple on the bottom of the tank and the tube runs thru the tank and has a small hole next to the fuel fill hole at the 6 o'clock postion in the rim. I am assuming this is for the emissions that some bikes came with right?? Can I just trim it flush with the bottom of the tank and seal it? Nothing on my old tank attached to a vent like this. Please advise.

Myself, I'd use it as a vent/overflow and just run a line off the nipple down to the bottom of the frame.
A couple of times, I have filled my tank just before going home and after parking, the heat off the engine caused the fuel to swell enough to overflow onto the ground through a similar tube I have on my tank. I think that is better than overflowing on my paint. My tube has a nipple up by the dashboard...I wish mine had a nipple on the bottom like yours does.
Your gas cap will probably be vented so you don't really need that thing as a vent but I was glad I used mine as an overflow.

This tube is solid all the way thru the tank. Gas would have to be leaking out the top of the gas fill hole before any would get in that tube.

Oh, I think I understand now. So it isn't just below the cap down in the neck that goes into the tank?
I wonder what that would be for...must be a vapor thing like you said.
Can you put up a picture of this thing?

It is a secondary vent and overflow tube. It can save your paint job as atated before. It is an option. If you seal it make sure your eseal it good because if it leaks it will strip the paint off of the surronding area. Personally we use them when we get a tank equiped with them. Hope this helps.
