Default gasoline smell

Don't know if this is normal, but my bike has a gas smell to it. there are no gas leaks as far as I can tell. maybe the smell is comming from the tank vent, or maybe this is just normal for an older bike. what do you all think?

very very limited information.
year, make , model, carb. , efi , miles, engine upgrades/changes, pipes, aircleaner.
but a shot in the dark would be fuel lines or connections from tank to throttle body/carb.

i would consider checking:
gas cap
gas valve under tank
the hoses on fuel line
and finally the carb. could it be dirty?
remember to close valve when bike is parked also.
The bike is a bit older and many of the rubber parts and gaskets in the fuel system may be drying out.
Could there be a very small vacuum leak near throttle body/carb area ?
If you see no gas the leak is probably very small.
If smell is only after you park..some bikes have it.

Check the tank vent line. If that sucker is leaking the fumes will rise up to your face. I had this problem. Fixed it with new vent line.

brwdarr,
I notice on my bike, a gasoline smell, at times quite strong, but I have never found a source like a leak.
I am using flatside tanks on this bike and ran a vent hose down the frame from the little vent line up just inside the fill on the right tank. I attribute the smell to that but I'm not really sure.
I hope yours is nothing serious.

Replaces all fuel lines and clamps.

Replace gas cap o rings.

Make sure needle and seat are not allowing fuel to overflow from carb.

Make sure the petcock doesn`t allow any fuel to pass through it when it is shut off.

One drop of gas can stink up a garage.

The only bikes that have a gas smell are the ones that have gas leaks.

Very true!

A slobering accelerator pump will do that too. It runs down the pedestal and soaks into your air filter. Check valves they use aren't the best, and some guys "adjust" the pump accuator rod (bu shortening it) to correct this. Float level seldom causes it, unless it's way too high.

The filler cap on those is a 2-way vent. Allows atmosphere in as well as fuel and vapors out. They're inexpensive and I'm guessing you've sniffed in that area already, but thought it worth mentioning.

And it is common to get a whiff on occasion - hot day, vapors venting and/or overfilled the tank. But I would find it, no matter what it took... before a spark, one day, finds it for you

I have searched high and low for the source of the fuel smell. I have found nothing. I built the bike so I will say I know it very well. It is just an occasional thing and it has never stunk up the garage. I have to be working on the bike to notice it. Never smelled anything riding it or stopped in traffic. The petcock is closed when the engine is off.
Maybe my shnoz is extra sensitive to gasoline.
I still suspect the tank overflow line. I usually fill the bike on my way home so the tanks are usually full when I am working on it.

brwdarr, I hope you find the source of your concern.
