my 90 fltc has a bad rattle comming from the fuel door on the dash. I've try everything I can think of and can't seam to get rid of it. today I took the door off. I have had enough. peace and quit at last. no more rattle. I was wondering if someone here may have an ideal of what I could do to fix the problem, seeing how ugly my bike looks without the fuel door. ugly or not, I'm not going back to that anoying noise, so I'm asking for your help. thanks
You could try a thin coat of silicone on the mating surface to make up the difference between the two parts. Or possibly a rubber stick on bumper to tighten things back up.
Try a hardware store like Lowes etc. They should have some little rubber bumpers for a cabinet door, also look for some foam padding like they use under a battery. Just use some rubber cement to fasten it. Hope this helps.
Whatever you get, make sure gasoline won't damage it. Pour a little gas on it and let it sit for a few minutes. If it melts, find something else. You never know when you might accidentally overfill the tank and some gets in there. I don't do it often, but it happens enough to make sure your piece doesn't melt from the fumes.
You also might see if you can adjust the catch mechanism. I don't recall off hand exactly how it looks, but if that is too loose, that might be doing it. My door fits pretty tight. I take the key out and have to press it down for the lock to catch.
good advice DR. I'll use it to. my door fit tight to the catch. I believe it has to much sideway play from around the pin area where the door attaches to the dash. I think it is just wear from all the years of used. I did add some rubber bumper this morning and so far so good. the only problem is my door won't lock shut. I will adjust them around some and see if I can't get it to lock. thanks
I had used a lil foam ball, about the size of a golf ball, then I got tired of using the key to get it open. Bought a newer style lid so i could use Harleys push button opener.
They all inner change, just that the 90 has a larger hole and the push button wouldn't work, so you need to up date like everything else on a 90 Flht. no more rattle!
I just fixed the same problem. The rattle comes from the loose fit of the hinge pin and the bracket. I took the hinge apart and put small pieces of velcro next to the pin , then screwed the bracket back on. The velcro or anything else really took up the space and stopped the rattle.
