Default 1986 fxwg

Does anyone know how many 86 FXWG's left the factory with a red metalflake flame paint job.
I've owned mine for 18yrs and have only seen two others in person.

I don't know but that looks like it might be one of those custom or limited edition paint sets. If so, try looking on the right hand side, lower rear section of the tank. If there's a 80/100, that would mean you have the 80th paint set out of 100. You might also try contacting the MoCo Museum.
ps Welcome to the forum. Lots of great info/help to be had here.

the 86 you have was before the numbered "custom" paint sets from the factory. I know someone who has one here in MD. I am the original owner of my 85 FXWG. It came in the same brandywine color, but my tank was two-tone with slate gray and a big gold wing. the flames were an 86 only deal. not sure how many were produced with that paint. 86 was the final year for the FXWG Wide Glide, and the end of all kick starts.

Not a custom paint . A friend has an 86 with a black with red flame paint job. Another post said that info he received from HD said only 579 WG's were made in 86

Yea I saw the other post about the 578 models produced but I don't think they all had flame paintjobs.
The limited edition makes it hard to find parts listed for it.
The bike runs great, I have gone through the top end and trany but it has been very reliable. The kick start works ok but it's like kicking over a tank compaired to a shovel or panhead.
Thanks for the info.

I know what your talking about when it comes to parts. I have an 85 WG and my clutch basket cracked when the bearing went south. Of coarse they only made it my style for 6 months and HD was the only place selling it. Do like still having both options as far as starting goes

there are plenty of places to get that style clutch (actually better made then the originals that cracked at the keyway)

the 86 with flames was never officially called a "limited edition" or "custom". other then the paint option its the same as all other 86's and I believe identical to the 85 model. I don't know of any changes between 85 and 86.

Can't remember where I got it from but the 1st one I got to replace my basket had a different starter ring gear placement. That's when I found out they changed them in mid year. Early 85 and late 85 baskets are different.
Checked one of my books and you are right they are available these days. Cost a little bit more but when I needed it the part wasn't to be found from after market dealers.

I hate to derail this thread but....
Speaking of color, how can I verify the color on my '96 RK?

It's kind of purple.

The clear has bubbled in a couple of places and I might strip it and re paint it this winter but I don't have a clue on the color!

I've only seen one other bike that was the same and the owner didn't have any idea either!

Is there someplace that lists the colors available in '96 or is it listed in the VIN number?

Thanks.
