Default Clickity click, click click.

OK, so my '96 Low Rider really let me down today and made me look foolish. Something my Shovel NEVER did. I was out at a local charity run sponsored by Colonial Harley and half way threw we stopped to get our poker card. When I hit the starter button all I got was that real fast machine gun click. I tried a number of times, but just clicks. I was able to push start it and get home. When I got home, same sound, real fast clicks. I push started it again and put my volt meter on it and the batterys at 12.8 off and 14.0 running. It did this once before and I pulled the solinoid cover and yanked and cleaned the brass washer, magnets and plunger. I thought that was the problem, but as I found out its doing it again. Where do I go from here? What do I do or fix next. Starter, Relay, loose wires.......what? Suggestions PLEASE!

Neil

When you push the starter button and get a single loud click it us usually a bad contact on the solenoid.

If it is clicking fast it sounds to me like a low battery or bad contact on a cable.

Definetly not a low battery. I replaced the battery with a GEL Matt battery when this happened the first time so this wouldn't happen again. So the battery and at least the cables on the battery side are tight. I will check the other cables and wires and see what I come up with. Thanks.

Check ALL your connections. The symptoms are usually caused by low voltage, this can be caused by a bad battery, bad solenoid, bad connections, bad relay, bad starter switch, or bad grounds on any of the above that need grounds. Hope this helps.

Just recently experienced something similar on my '87 Softail Custom. Went for a long ride Sunday and at our first stop I go out to restart my bike and just hear a bunch of clicks. I get it push started and head to our second stop and try to start and get nothing. The guys I was riding with told me my headlights just kept getting more and more dim as we approached the second stop. I have to jump start it this time. Finally, I get home and do some research and test the stator/regulator. Pretty sure I have a bad regulator as I'm getting 60 to 70 AC volts out of the stator.

If you are having a charging issue this post is very helpful:

I second that from Miacycles, it could be anything. I have chased down all kinds of problems. Now I carry a jump wire that goes to the coil and one that goes to the starter selinoid with an in one switch. Now I never get stuck and the main switch dosn't have to be on. The good thing about the EVO is you can rig it to run, unlike the EFI bikes.

Noise description is always hard to diagnose without actually hearing the sound. You could have a bad bendix.

Batterys new. It did this with the old battery as well. I've not had much time to check it out yet, but I recharged the battery just to be sure and the same thing happens. I pulled the battery out and I'm tightening everything, going threw the solinoid again. A few loose wires around the bike I tightened so far. This weekend I'll have more time to pull and replace any thing I find questionable.

Just wanted to post up a big thanks and mention it was the dang relay. But just to make sure I don't look like a yutz in the future, I installed a push button on my solinoid. So one more Evo's back on the road.

Hello,
I have a 1993 heritage and was wondering can you go into a little more detail on
the Jumper wire, ie: how long how many, where exactly do you connect to.
All and any specific detailed info. would be appreciated,
thanks
