If you do this, update this forum and let us know what worked (or didn't). I'm interested in this as well. Main point is to get rid of the speedo cable. Second is that the po installed a speedo with a late 40's faceplate which doesn't have a reed switch in it and I miss the automatic turn signal cancellers. I figure if I gotta spend $100 to get them back, I might as well spend more to get a digital speedo with a tach.

I have a 93 tranny, so there's no blank for the sensor so I'd have to use the rear wheel sensor.

 

Dakota Digital makes a piece that fastens to your original cable and converts it to electric, that way you do not need to mount a sensor.

 

I have been gathering up the parts....shopping for best prices. (Ebay, swap meets...etc.)

I just recently acquired everything needed for the changeover.

The color coded wiring is the same '98 vs. '01 model. Wiring won't be a problem.

2001 gauges....tachometer, speedometer, and plus the other gauges....$45 at a swap meet. In fact, the speedometer has about the same mileage on my bike.

2001 main wiring harness....$35 from Ebay. This included the speed sensor as well.

The transmission shifter spring broke....at that point the transmission had to come apart. During this time, I drilled out the case to accept the speed sensor.

When I get done installing a main wiring harness on a cop bike I recently got......then I'll start on my own bike. Hopefully by then, the temperature will be cooler....

 

Thanks MiaC. I was looking for something like exactly like that. Don't know why I couldn't find it before. Nice price too: $25-35. Better than spending $120 for a rear wheel sensor. Now time for some more research to see what speedo/tach will work with my turn signals and which series sensor will work with the speedo/tach selected.

Edit: Crap, that's not it. The item Dakota has is a converter from speedo cable to electronic. But this attaches to the top end of your speedo cable. I was looking for something to attach to the gear driven unit on the wheel which would eliminate the cable entirely.

 

Just have a short cable made to move the unit to someplace you can hide it and run wire to the speedo. We've done this on numerous custom builds throughout the years.

 

Only place to hide it is behind the headlight or under the tank; might as well keep the old speedometer cable if I was gonna do that. A better option would then be the $100 pickup mounted on the rear sprocket. Dakota Digital replied that they don't make anything like that.

The best solution would be to have the stock speedo cable drive unit on the axle converted to the Dakota sending unit. I wonder how much fabrication that would take.
