I have an 85 FXRT and had new clutch plates put in. I have adjusted the clutch a couple of times in the housing itself but am now out of adjustment on the cable. It was fitted by a mate who I trust but he has told me to put another plate in which seems unusual. Is this normal practice or is the problem somewhere else. Cheers

I just found the invoice and that tells me he purchased 11 of each so I am now more confused. I will have to get on to him and find out exactly what he has done.
First off the clutch is not adjusted at the cable, the cable only adjusts freeplay and it should be 1/8". The clutch is adjusted inside the primary, on the clutch itself. You need to turn the cable in all the way so there is slack, then unlock the nut in the center of the clutch. Next turn the allen bolt in untill you feel resistancethen turn it in a full turn to ensure it is fully seated. Then back ot out, and bring it back in until you just feel resistance again. Back the allen out 1/2 turn, hold it there and tighten the jam nut without allowing the allen to turn. Nexy adjust the cable out until you have 1/8" of free play between the cable ferrule and the clutch handle bracket. Hope this helps.

It is not uncommon to have an extra steel plate in that type clutch housing. Some need it - some do not.
There are 2 adjustments that must be correct before the cable can be properly adjusted. One is the spring plate that adjusts the pressure on the plates/discs. Assuming it's not slipping or dragging, I'll skip that one for now.
Adjust as Miacycles explained. (good morning John )
You could have other problems, but adding an extra disc is only to give additional adjustment of the spring plate which I did not explain. But an extra plate does not have any direct affect on the cable adjustment whatsoever. Also, it is not uncommon for the cable to be near to the end of its adjustment length.
I put an extra steel plate in my clutch on the advice of the mechanics at the dealership. I put all new Genuine HD plates in when I did it. I was right at the minimum acceptable measurement point and had it apart to fix an oil leak, so I just put new in.
